Holiday Juniata 2017

Here is our final show for the year! And our final K - 6th show!  We'll be in one school next year and will have new kinds of programs.   Tonight was truly the end of an era!   I have loved it since 1984, with an 8 year hiatus to stay home with my children.  AND, I am looking forward to a new school and a new style of program!

You Are Our Heroes by Teresa Jennings

I teach in three elementary schools that all feed into one high school.  This is our last year for three schools as next year we will be moving into a brand new school.  Here are all 420 of my students from Adams Central Elementary Schools: East, Juniata and Wallace singing You Are Our Heroes by Teresa Jennings. Nov. 8, 2017 at our Veterans’s Day program at Adams Central High School.

Pass the Pumpkin

This is a classic Game Song we Play/Sing/Perform every year in October.  Pass The Pumpkin. It's a great alternative to Halloween activities as it doesn't mention anything scary or objectionable.  Just a pumpkin and music.  This video was taken before I had an HD video recorder so it's a little grainy, but still good.

SOUSA The Stars and Stripes Forever - "The President's Own" U.S. Marine ...

I try to show the BEST examples I can of musical styles, directors, instruments, etc.  This one is classic.  There is a little history of John Phillip Sousa at the beginning by the poised conductor and the video quality is superb.  My students get a great lesson at Sousa as well as a good instrument view with this video!  Enjoy!

Three Blind MIce

I introduced Three Blind Mice today to include in our partner songs of Freré Jacques and Row, Row, Row.  We talked about how cute mice are in the movies and how I DO NOT like them in real life!  I said, "I love those mice in Cinderella! You know?"  One sweet boy raised his hand with a confused look on his face and said, "Mrs. Lukow, WHO is Cinderella?"  :) The girls in the class GASPED!  ;)   I told him I would talk to his mama about making sure he gets to see that movie!

This is a cute little puppet I've had for years.  I got it at The Henry Doorly Zoo.

Yikes, they are collectible now!  $50 and up!

See them on Amazon!

We're playing the Name Game at the end of 5th and 6th grades today!  It's crazy how something so simple can be so intense AND fun!!

I said I was taking a break this summer, but I had to throw this article out there.  If every teacher would read this and embrace it, what a world we would create!

Summer ... Time Off

We're three weeks into summer and I feel like I'm just starting to realize a little bit of rest and relaxation.  You see, my dad passed away the day after school was out.  I had just arrived at school for a work day when I got the call from my mom.  The past three weeks have been a blur.  I loved my dad so much and will miss him terribly and I need the time.  Time to rest.  Time to relax.  Time to grieve.

So I'm going to give my blog a rest too.  If you want to see what I'm up to, come on over to my FB Music Page or follow me on Instagram.  I will see YOU in August.

Wallace 6th Grade Promotion 2017

I teach in three elementary schools that feed into one jr. high/high school.  We each have a 6th grade promotion.  They choose their own songs, approved by me and they ALL sing.  I'm very proud of my students.   In 2018, we will all move to one elementary school.  We will have 3 - 4 sections of each grade.  We're looking forward to being together in one building.  Until then, we do things in triplicate.  It's an honor and a privilege.

2017 Wallace Kindergarten - Beatles Surprise

This is one of the most special programs I have had the opportunity to put together.  My friend and colleague, Jim Donley is retiring this year so I thought it would be a fun thing to have a surprise Beatles mini-concert for him at the end of our regular scheduled kindergarten program.

We began practicing little by little on the first day of school.  Most day, we would sing a Beatles song and I considered which ones would be best to sing for him as a musical gift.  We decided on Do You Want To Know A Secret, A Little Help From My Friends and Here Comes the Sun.

I hope you the viewer will enjoy this, but I know there is no way you could know the full impact this had on us unless you know Jim.  To know Jim Donley is to be inspired to be a better person.  I'm so thankful for our friendship and that I got to teach with him.  Blessings.

2017 W.O.W. 5th Grade Students of Kristin Lukow

5th grade students are tested over music vocabulary each year. This is one of the ways we review!
We are missing melody and harmony in this movie but I promise they know them!  We take a pre-test and post-test each year and if they raise their class average by 10 points, I have them a whole music class of recess.  Class #1 went from a 69% to a 92% so they are going to play!  The other two classes have yet to take their tests.  We shall see!!

I do believe we have a deficit in our country, a deficit of enthusiasm.  Perhaps not in all things.  Some are enthusiastic about favorite sports teams but in my humble view, we are lacking enthusiasm for the simple pleasures in life, the important things. Friendship.  Family.  Faith. Learning.  We seem to sometimes take an apathetic view of the things that matter most while embracing those things which ultimately make no difference.  Families, I encourage you to love each other well and experience life with joy!  Model enthusiasm and enjoy life together!

Why do we sing?

I wonder how much better we would feel, how much more kind the world would be, if we got together often and sang?

Our National Anthem Inside Fort McHenry!

This university is from Nebraska!  They are on their way to the inauguration and stopped at Fort Mchenry where The Star-Spangled Banner was written!  What an honor and a treat!  Wow!

The Untold Story of 'The Sound of Music'

Music is Weird!

Funny. Funny. Funny. kind of helps me realize I can lighten up a bit. Sometimes music is just weird and we don't need to know everything NOR teach everything! Ah..........................
